Day 2 & 3: The rolling dunes of the Kalahari

Kalahari Desert

Located on the edge of the Kalahari Desert and surrounded by rolling red dunes, Kalahari Red Dunes offers a very different desert experience to the more well-known Namib Desert.

The Kalahari is not officially categorised as a desert but is rather a savannah environment of wide open grasslands and stunted acacias.

As such, it is home to many interesting wildlife species including meerkat (suricate), porcupine, bat-eared fox, oryx, ostrich, wildebeest and zebra.

Kalahari Red Dunes Lodge lies on the banks of a vlei and is surrounded by some of the most beautiful sand dunes of the Kalahari.

Early morning and sundowner game drives are offered, as well as hiking trails on a well-developed network of paths. Choose from one hour walks to full day excursions. Guided options are also available. Of special interest here is an optional visit to the devil’s claw plantation combined with a slide show and further information about the conservation of this specific endangered plant for medicinal purposes.

Day 4 & 5: The geographical wonders of the Fish River Canyon

Fish River Canyon

Three hundred million years of geological wonder lie below Fish River Lodge, the only lodge perched directly on the rim of the Fish River Canyon, the world’s second largest canyon.

From the comfort of your bed, you can enjoy spectacular views of the Canyon from sunrise to sunset.

A visit to Fish River Lodge can be as adventurous or as tranquil as you like. For the more energetic, there are long walks along the rim of the Canyon and sundowner trails where you can watch the sun set whilst sipping a glass of champagne.

The qualified guides can take you on an optional excursion hiking down into the heart of the Canyon or serve lunch at a permanent waterhole on the Fish River. Dinner & breakfast included.

Day 6 & 7: The rich history of the Namib Desert

Klein-Aus Vista

Klein Aus is a beautifully positioned private farm located on the edge of the Namib Desert with spectacular views from the boulder strewn hillsides across wide open plains.

Eagle’s Nest is set at the foot of the Aus mountains, 7km away from the reception and restaurant complex and yet easily accessible by sedan car in 10 minutes. Each chalet also has an equipped kitchenette, so guests are welcome to take a dinner pack and eat in their chalet, soaking up the desert atmosphere if they prefer.

There are self-guided walks that can be taken on the farm as well as optional nature drives to view the Namib wild horses, or you may decide to just relax in the peaceful surroundings.

You may like to drive to Luderitz on day 6 where you could enjoy an optional boat cruise (this can be booked through Luderitz Tours & Safaris who have an office on the high street), or a drive out to Diaz Point where you may see some of the many bird species that can be found here.

Nearby is the ghost town of Kolmanskop, abandoned to the desert when the diamond mining became unfeasible in this area. Dinner & breakfast included.

Day 8-10: Experience the peace

NamibRand Game Reserve

Omaanda, meaning rhinoceros in Oshiwambo, is a five-star lodge set within the Zannier Reserve by N/a’an ku sê, an incredible private animal conservation reserve of 9000 hectares in the countryside surrounding Windhoek. Overlooking the boundless savannah, the lodge offers 10 comfortable round thatched huts, paying tribute to the traditional architecture of Ovambo.
